AMTA members feature in three-part podcast series by MHPN Presents

In collaboration with the Mental Health Professionals’ Network (MHPN), the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is proud to share a podcast series that explores how music therapy changes lives.

Led by Clinical Psychologist Prof. Mark Creamer and hosted by MHPN, this three-part series features AMTA members. Registered Music Therapists (RMTs) Dr Jason Kenner and Dr Jennifer Bibb join Prof. Creamer in a comprehensive exploration of how music therapy improves mental health and wellbeing.

About MHPN Presents

MHPN Presents offers listeners a unique opportunity to engage in insightful conversations between mental health practitioners. Reflecting on topics ranging from mental wellbeing to interdisciplinary practice and collaborative care, each episode provides valuable perspectives and practical strategies for enhancing mental health outcomes.

Episode 1, Music therapy and mental health: An introduction

In this introduction to music therapy, listeners are introduced to fundamental principles of music therapy – right down to definitions of music itself. We talk about the special educational requirements for health professionals practising in this speciality, the diverse modalities within music therapy, and how can be applied across various populations.

“You’re giving them a skill they can take away –  a coping mechanism. Longer term, it becomes another tool they have in their tool belt for promoting their mental health.”

Dr Jennifer Bibb RMT

It's a wonderful resource to share with people who are new to music therapy, or who would like to build on their knowledge.

Episode 2, Music therapy and mental health: Exploring a music therapy session

Learn about the versatility and efficacy of music therapy in the second instalment, with a detailed examination of what happens in a music therapy session.

“You can use active methods of music therapy, where we might play music, improvise or write songs. Or you can use more receptive methods, where you might listen to music and process emotions or thoughts through music that’s familiar to them, and then support them to use music to develop playlists to support their health.”

Dr Jennifer Bibb RMT

Through meticulous discussion and practical demonstrations – Jason even plays his guitar to demonstrate concepts – the hosts illuminate how RMTs tailor interventions to meet the unique needs of diverse clients, from premature infants to individuals grappling with mental health challenges.

Episode 3, Music therapy and mental health: Therapeutic outcomes

In the concluding episode, the focus shifts towards the measurable outcomes and efficacy of music therapy interventions. Delve into the treatment goals, mechanisms of change, and the nuanced distinctions between individual and group therapy sessions – and why it’s essential to work with an RMT who has the necessary qualifications and accreditation.

“We know music engages so much of the brain – motor neurons, memories, emotions, visual processing, everything. If the person who’s participating in the music therapy experience is feeling very engaged ... these experiences are more likely to lead to change.”

Dr Jason Kenner RMT
