There are 2 main pathways to becoming a registered music therapist (RMT):

  • complete an Australian accredited course or
  • complete an equivalent international course.

I have completed an Australian accredited course:

OR

2. RMT Application or Re-registration: Graduates who did not apply for RMT status within 12 months of completing their course OR re-registration of a lapsed RMT status. To learn more about the application process and documents you need to prepare to apply, please contact AMTA's Professional Standards Liaison Officer professionalstandards@austmta.org.au for more information.

Your application will be reviewed by the Registration Committee, and the outcome will be notified to you along with the next steps to be taken. This review period may take 2-3 weeks.

OR

3. RMT change of registration status application.

A status change is for RMTs who are requiring a break from their active membership, or returning to practice.

If you are an RMT and you need to change your membership status from:

  • Inactive status to Active status
  • Active status to Inactive status
  • Please contact info@austmta.org.au for further information.

Important information to know includes:

  • Inactive status still requires yearly submission of CPD.
  • A period of one year is granted, during which recency of practice does not need to be collected. After one year, a resumption of practice pathway may be required to return to Active RMT status.

Members can read more information in the Policy library in My AMTA. Non-members, please contact info@austmta.org.au for more information.

I have completed an equivalent international course:

If you wish to become a Registered Music Therapist then you will need to undertake the following:

  • Submit a copy of the music therapy course syllabus that you have completed. If possible, also provide a web link to the syllabus.
  • Submit a certified copy of your music therapy course transcript + transcripts of any other related courses (eg. music performance, psychology, counselling, etc).
  • Submit a current resume / CV detailing qualifications and work experience relating to music therapy or other relevant areas of work.
  • Submit three reference letters. Each referee must have known you and observed your work for a minimum of one year. The referees must sign the letter and include their contact details as further information about your character or work may be requested; this will be kept in confidence.
  • Submit a typed document, maximum two pages in length, identifying how your supporting documents (listed above) provide evidence of the required skills outlined in the AMTA Competency Standards in Music Therapy document.
  • Submit an Australian National Police Check certificate if you provide services to Australian residents. If you are an internationally Registered Music Therapist providing services to Australian residents including telehealth, an Australian National Police Check is required. Please refer to the Mandatory Declaration Policy for further information.

Please note the criteria for the supporting documentation:

  • All files must be in pdf format and clearly titled, eg. "Jessica Smith - CV"
  • If original copies of the academic transcript or syllabus are not in English, then a translated copy from a certified translator must also be submitted
  • Send all pdf documents in the one email to registration@austmta.org.au

AMTA's professional competency standards are currently under review. The external consultation process is due to end in December 2024, with new standards to be released in January 2025 to ensure compliance with the NASRHP standards. Please contact us if you require more information.
