Recently, the Queensland Sunday Mail promoted the benifits of music therapy, presetning some reseach findings from the University of California.
The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) is an international organization bringing together music therapy associations and individuals interested and active in developing and promoting music therapy globally through professional exchange, collaboration, and action. Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy operates out of the Golden Stave Music Therapy Centre on the grounds of UWS Kingswood, and provides music therapy for all who can benefit, regardless of their ability to pay.
The Centre, which receives no state or government funding, sees over 240 clients each week. The year’s fundraising events will take place in Penrith and Sydney and will include trivia nights, concerts, the bi-annual Art of Music, Frocks at the Trots, the Whitewater Challengeand a golf tournament.
Willoughby councillor, Cr Rutherford has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of her work in music therapy, promoting Asian art and as a local government councillor. Cr Rutherford was instrumental in setting up Nordoff Robins Music Therapy Australia.
The new rehabilitation and therapeutic centre at St John of God Hospital will include a gymnasium, therapy rooms, a hydrotherapy pool, consulting suites, art and music therpy rooms, and specialist consulting suites. Two allied health assistants will also work in the centre. The centre is expected to be completed in late March and officially opened in April or May.
Recently, the Geelong Advertiser promoted the work of Melissa Murphy RMT. Melissa, originally from Mount Duneed, spent 15 years establishing a successful practice in Melbourne before returning to live in Geelong. She has worked in aged care, disability, autism, special education schools, private practises and at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Aardvark is a Melbourne-based, non-profit organisation that supports young people, who have faced long serious illness, through music therapy. Nordoff-Robbins received all proceeds from the inaugural Vanda and Young songwriting competition, totalling $130,000.
