About Us

The Australian Music Therapy Association Inc. was founded in 1975 as the sole Australian organisation for the profession of music therapy. It is a member of the World Federation of Music Therapy and the Music Council of Australia. AMTA Inc. has State Branches, Interest Groups and representatives throughout Australia. It offers support and professional development for Registered Music Therapists, and general membership to anyone with an interest in music therapy.

National Committees

The National Council is supported in its efforts by the work of auspiced committees. The Chairs of each of the National Committees comprise a reference group, known as the Assembly of National Chairs. This Assembly informs and advises the work of the National Council. Continuing Professional Development

This committee is responsible for preparing the new Continuing Professional Development system for music therapists registered with AMTA Inc.

Education

The Education Committee is responsible for maintaining the quality and standard of training in music therapy programs that are accredited by the AMTA Inc. The role of the committee is to assess and approve new courses, conduct validation/re-accreditation procedures, monitor the formal procedures of the Education Committee, and monitor any major changes to courses currently accredited.

Ethics All members of the AMTA Inc. (this includes General members and students) are bound by the AMTA Inc Code of Ethics (2001). Hard copies are available from the National Office or, for members, the document can be downloaded from the Members' Page.
The Ethics Committee administers the Association's Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice and By-laws for Grievance Procedures. All questions related to such matters should be forwarded to the Chair.

Government Relations

The AMTA Inc Government Relations committee is an umbrella committee overseeing the work on several key professional issues including GST exemption, health insurance and Casemix.

Education task force:  Kathy Butcher, Dianne Langan, Ann Lehmann.

Membership is sought for a range of other taskforces in areas including health insurance, taxation, aged care, industrial relations (Work Choices and State awards).

 

Registration

The National Registration Committee (NRC) is responsible for:

  • assessing new applicants, including overseas applicants, for suitability for registration;
  • recommending a further course of study for music therapists who allow their registration to lapse for more than 12 months and are applying for re-registration;
  • reviewing, revising and implementing registration and re-registration procedures/policies ratified by National Council;
  • updating documents relevant to registration and re-registration procedures and policies.

Publications

The National Publications Committee is responsible for providing regular news in the form of newsletters to the membership of AMTA Inc. This is produced in both hard copy and electronic versions. The National Publications Committee is also responsible for producing this website.
